1912年パリ郊外のジャンティイに生まれる。エコール・エスティエンヌで石版を学び、写真家アンドレ・ヴィニョーの助手となる。1932年、初のルポルタージュ「蚤の市」が『エクセルシオール』紙に掲載される。その後、ルノー社のカメラマンなどを経て、1939年フリーとして活動を開始。1949年から51年まで『ヴォーグ』誌の契約カメラマンとして、ファッション写真や社交界を撮影。特にパリの庶民たちの日常をとらえた写真で高い評価を得、1951年にはニューヨーク近代美術館で開催された「5人のフランス人写真家」展に、アンリ・カルティエ＝ブレッソン、ブラッサイ、ウィリー・ロニ、イジスとともに出品作家に選ばれる。1974年、アルル国際写真フェスティバルの特別招待作家となる。1992年、オックスフォード近代美術館（英国）で大回顧展「ロベール・ドアノーに捧げる」開催。2000年、「パリ市庁舎前のキス」撮影50周年を記念して、パリ市庁舎前広場に大型プリントが展示される。2012年、生誕100周年を記念して世界各地で多数展覧会が開催される。ニエプス賞(1956年)、仏国内写真大賞（1983年）など受賞多数。1994年逝去（享年82歳）。
Robert Doisneau was born 1912 in Gentilly, a suburb of Paris in the Département Val-de-Marne. After studying lithography at the École Estienne, he became assistant to photographer André Vigneau. In In 1932, his first photo reportage Flea market is serialized within in the pages of the magazine Excelsior. 1934 he started working as advertorial photographer at Renault and, eventually, decided to become an independent photographer four years later in 1939. In between 1949 and 1951 he works for Vogue as fashion- and high-society photographer. In 1951, he was selected as one of five French artists to be exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York together with Cartier-Bresson, Brassaï, Willy Ronis and Izis. In 1974 he is invited to the photography festival Les Rencontres de la Photographie d’Arles. A retrospective of his works was held at Modern Art Oxford in 1992, two years before he died. In 2000, 50 years after taking his famous photograph The Kiss, a large-sized poster of The Kiss is at the square in front of Paris’ town hall. In 2012, in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of his birthday, various exhibitions were held all over the world. During his lifetime he won several awards, including the Niépce Prize in 1956 and the Grand Prix National de la Photographie in 1983.
