1923年12月3日、ペンシルバニア州ピッツバーグに生まれる。父親はユダヤ教の聖職者。1946年、画家を志し、神学校を中退してニューヨークへ移住。1958年、ヘンリー・ウルフがアートディレクターに就任した『ハーパーズ・バザー』誌でカメラマンとして仕事をはじめる。その後、1950年代から80年代にかけて『ハーパーズ・バザー』をはじめ多くの雑誌でファッション写真を撮影するなど、ニューヨークで第一線のファッション・カメラマンとして活躍。58歳になった年、自らのスタジオを閉鎖。世間から姿を消す。80歳を過ぎた2006年に、ドイツのシュタイデル社によって出版された作品集を機に、再び写真会で脚光を浴びる。この新たな発見は大きなセンセーションとなり、その後、展覧会開催や出版が相次ぐ。2012年にはドキュメンタリー映画「写真家ソール・ライター 急がない人生で見つけた13のこと」（日本公開は2015年）が公開され、その名前と作品は多くの人に知れ渡る。2013年11月26日、ニューヨークにて逝去。享年89歳。2014年、ソール・ライターの作品を管理する目的でソール・ライター財団が創設。

Born December 3, 1923 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. His father was a Jewish clergyman.In 1946, he decided to become a painter, dropped out of seminary, and moved to New York City.In 1958, he began working as a photographer for Harper’s Bazaar magazine, where Henry Wolfe became the art director.In 1958, he began working as a photographer for “Harper’s Bazaar” magazine, of which Henry Wolfe became the art director. At the age of 58, he closed his studio and disappeared from the public eye.In 2006, after turning 80, he returned to the limelight with a book of his work published by Steidel in Germany.In 2012, a documentary film, “13 Things I Found in My Untimely Life,” was released in Japan in 2015, bringing his name and work to the attention of many people.He passed away on November 26, 2013 in New York City at the age of 89. He was 89 years old.In 2014, the Saul Writer Foundation was established to manage Saul Writer’s works.
